My Story
Hi, I’m Nellie Huang — a travel writer, book author, serial expat and fun mum.
For as long as I can remember, travel has been a big part of my life. The day I graduated with a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, I packed my bags and took off on an open-ended journey around the world. In 2008, I started a travel blog, WildJunket.com, to document my travels around Africa, Asia, and South America. I had no idea it would lead me to a career in travel writing and to a life of adventures.
Fast forward to today, I’ve had the privilege of traveling to over 140 countries across all seven continents. I have gone on assignments to many incredible places including Antarctica, Greenland, North Korea, Bhutan, and Papua New Guinea.
These days, I am a regular contributor for several major international publications. I co-authored Lonely Planet’s Mexico guidebook (2023) and wrote the chapters on Chiapas, Veracruz and Northern Mexico. I am also the proud author of Explorers, a non-fiction storybook for children that tells the amazing tales of the world’s greatest adventurers.
Why Mexico?
Born and raised in Singapore, I consider myself a global citizen who thrives in multi-cultural environments. I’ve lived in many parts of the world: including the US, UK, Spain and the Netherlands.
In 2021, my husband and I embarked on a journey once again in search for a new place to settle with our 6-year-old daughter. We were looking for a place with tropical weather, proper infrastructure, good education for our kid and a large expat community — and Mexico’s Caribbean coast ticked all our boxes. I subsequently created the Tulum Travel Blog to share all the secret spots and local haunts we discovered in this part of Mexico.
After two years of living on the beach, we recently moved to San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico in search of more Mexican culture. We are loving the sense of community, the rich history and charming personality of this beautiful town.
This Mexico Travel Blog is a labor of love and a channel through which I can share my love for our adopted country with the world. I’ve poured all my heart and soul into it, and hope you enjoy it!
