  • Most people give advice based on their own fears. If I had taken that advice, I would have never taken the risk that changed my life. In 2008, I quit my job in Singapore to travel for six months in Latin America and pursue travel writing and blogging full time. It didn’t happen overnight. It took months of hard work, research, writing, pitching, long travel days and moments when I almost gave up. But choosing this path led me to a life of freedom and adventure. 🌎🏔️🥾 It took me to 150 countries, including places that I wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise, like Antarctica, Svalbard, Bhutan, and Papua New Guinea. It allowed me to live anywhere I want with my digital nomads family, having the flexibility to spend quality time with my kid while worldschooling her. So if you’re trying to choose between the realistic path and the one that scares you a little, here’s a reminder to take the path that’s less known. ✨ 👋 Hi!   • “Isn’t Cape Town dangerous? “ 🇿🇦 Having been in Cape Town for 4 months now, I’ve found the city to be generally safe as long as you know where to avoid. My family and I never felt threatened and never experienced anything dangerous — that said, we don’t walk alone at night, don’t engage with suspicious people and are always aware of our surroundings. But safety is a complex issue and it’ll be wrong to say Cape Town is completely safe. It has a relatively high crime rate, though the serious crimes are more prevalent in the Cape Flats area. Some of the common crimes involve carjacking, “smash and grab” attacks, house robbery, and sexual assault. What you need to know: ⚠️The tourist-friendly areas (Sea Point, V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay) feel vibrant and fairly safe, especially during the day. ⚠️ Vehicle-related theft is a known issue: smash-and-grab incidents at traffic lights are something to be careful about. ⚠️ When hiking Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, use a guide or go in a group. Mugging is quite common. Safety tips for visitors: ⚠️ Don’t flash valuables, avoid dark deserted streets, use reputable transport, and keep emergency contacts handy. ⚠️ The Namola Safety App is very useful — helps call for help with your GPS location. ⚠️ Avoid certain neighborhoods like Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and Langa, unless you’re with a trusted local or guide. 👋 Hi!   • Week 3 of our Cape Town Diaries 💛 Summer finally arrived, which means… pool days, beach sunsets, and our first surf session at Muizenberg (she stood up on the board several times 😎🌊). We slowed things down this week — Forest School wreath-making, exploring the Heart of Cape Town Museum (where the first successful heart bypass surgery happened!), and eating our way through the city with Greek food, Chinese hotpot, and everything in between. Surfing at Muizenberg was the highlight — tiny victories and big wipeouts included. After all the sun, wind, and saltwater, we’re feeling grateful, recharged, and ready for whatever Cape Town brings next. ☀️💛🌊 👋 Hi! I’m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum.
