  • Happy New Year everyone! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸ₯³

2025 was a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows: here’s a look.

HIGHS:

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ Fell in love with our new home: Cape Town, South Africa!

πŸ’» This year I got offered more travel writing opportunities than usual! I wrote several travel guide series for @telegraph and @mexiconewsdaily.

πŸ“– Published another two guidebooks for @lonelyplanet

πŸ‡²πŸ‡¬ Brought Kaleya to where we honeymooned: Madagascar! Thrilled to find it hasn’t changed too much and it remains one of our favorite countries.

πŸ“š We finally started homeschooling with Kaleya and realized it’s easier than expected!

πŸͺ‚ Brought Kaleya paragliding in Valle de Bravo πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ as a birthday gift. She loved it!

πŸ₯Ύ Kaleya did the longest hike she’s ever done: 8km from El Chalten to the base of Mount Fitzroy in Patagonia.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Went back to Spain with our friends from Mexico and celebrated Reyes Magos with them!

LOWS

πŸ’» AI severely affected my blogs’ readership and my income, thankfully I have other work to fall back on.

πŸ˜” Said goodbye to our friends in Mexico who have become like family to us!

πŸ›‚ Failed to get our South African visas as we didn’t have the right documentation during our interview in Madrid. Moved to Cape Town anyway, even if it’s just for a few months!

🐢 Sadly we had to leave our dog Brownie with family in Spain, as pet import rules in South Africa are very strict.

I am SO ready to start 2026 on a clean slate!

πŸ‘‹ Hi! I’m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum. I share all I’ve learned about digital nomad family travel here. So glad you’re here! 🌏

  • Merry Christmas! πŸŽ„ Warmest wishes from our family to yours. πŸ’—

Christmas has always been the most important day of the year for us. But especially so since Kaleya came into our lives. We try to keep our Xmas traditions alive and make it a special and magical time for all of us. πŸŽ„β„οΈ

This Christmas, we’re celebrating in Cape Town to experience the festive season in our new homebase. It actually feels strange to be in summer weather at Xmas but we’re embracing it! 🏝️😬🌊

We just had a gorgeous Christmas Eve dinner at the beautiful @kloofstreethouse, and now we’re fully stuffed. We’ll be spending the rest of the evening watching Xmas movies n getting excited to see what Santa brings us. 🍿πŸŽ₯

Our stockings are hung, and we’ve got the cookies, milk and carrots ready for Santa Claus and his reindeers. Tomorrow we’ll be opening presents all morning and having a homecooked feast for Christmas Day lunch.

πŸŽ„How are you celebrating Christmas???
  • Christmas in Alsace, France πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

If fairytales had a Christmas setting, it would be here.

πŸŽ„ Strasbourg
Often called the Capital of Christmas. Twinkling lights, carousel rides, half-timbered houses, and festive markets that really do live up to the hype. Wander Petite France early in the morning, when the streets are quiet and the lights are still glowing. β˜ƒοΈ

🍭Colmar
One of the prettiest Christmas towns we’ve ever visited. Canals lined with lights, colourful houses, and small markets perfect for wandering with kids. Our tip: visit on a weekday morning and avoid peak evenings.

🏰 Riquewihr & Ribeauvillé
Smaller Alsatian villages that feel just as magical but far less overwhelming. Cobblestone streets, medieval towers, and cozy markets where kids can actually move around without the crowds.

How we avoided the crowds:
– Stay in a smaller village outside the main towns
– Visit popular spots early morning or around lunchtime
– Rent a car to move between towns easily
– Go midweek whenever possible

✨ Save this for your winter family bucket list.

  • One of my favorite things about traveling with kids is choosing places that become part of the experienceβ€” not just somewhere to sleep.

Swipe through for some of our most unforgettable stays πŸ‘‡

❄️ @ArcticSnowHotel – Rovaniemi, Finland
Sleeping in an ice room, wrapped in thermal sleeping bags, chasing northern lights, and meeting Santa nearby β€” a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

🐚 Casa Caracol – Isla Mujeres, Mexico
Set against the Caribbean Sea, this quirky shellhouse is designed for modern-day mermaids looking for something different. I booked this place for my 40th birthday and had a blast enjoying island time with my family.

🌲 @Treehotel – Harads, Sweden
Suspended in the forest are a series of treehouses reached by ladders and bridges. We stayed in the UFO shuttle but there’s also the glass house and nest. Nature, imagination, and adventure rolled into one.

🌿 @Tapasoli – Xilitla, Mexico
Sleeping in hobbit-style burrows tucked into the jungle overlooking the valley transported us to Hobbiton. 🌳✨ This is one of those places where imagination runs wild.

🎭 Muralla Roja – Calpe, Spain
Playful, bold, and totally unexpected. Staying at this Squid Game apartment made our time in Calpe extra memorable β€” my kid LOVES when accommodations feel like an experience.

πŸ”οΈ Yurt camp β€” Issyk Kul, Kyrgyzstan
Sleeping on the floor, learning about nomadic life, and waking up to mountain views. One of the most grounding experiences you can have as a family.

β›Ί @CampingPehoe β€” Torres del Paine, Chile
Wild landscapes, cozy beds, and fires under the stars. Proof that adventure and comfort can coexist β€” even in remote Patagonia.

♨️ @Hakonetenyu Ryokan Hotel – Hakone, Japan
Tatami mats, futons, onsen baths, and the calmest atmosphere imaginable. A beautiful introduction to Japanese culture and mindful living β€” even with kids.

Which one would your kids choose? πŸ’βœ¨

Christmas in Alsace, France πŸ‡«πŸ‡· If fairytales had a Christmas setting, it would be here. πŸŽ„ Strasbourg Often called the Capital of Christmas. Twinkling lights, carousel rides, half-timbered houses, and festive markets that really do live up to the hype. Wander Petite France early in the morning, when the streets are quiet and the lights are still glowing. β˜ƒοΈ 🍭Colmar One of the prettiest Christmas towns we’ve ever visited. Canals lined with lights, colourful houses, and small markets perfect for wandering with kids. Our tip: visit on a weekday morning and avoid peak evenings. 🏰 Riquewihr & RibeauvillΓ© Smaller Alsatian villages that feel just as magical but far less overwhelming. Cobblestone streets, medieval towers, and cozy markets where kids can actually move around without the crowds. How we avoided the crowds: – Stay in a smaller village outside the main towns – Visit popular spots early morning or around lunchtime – Rent a car to move between towns easily – Go midweek whenever possible ✨ Save this for your winter family bucket list. πŸ‘‹ Hi! One of my favorite things about traveling with kids is choosing places that become part of the experienceβ€” not just somewhere to sleep.

Which one would your kids choose? πŸ’βœ¨
