  • The highlight of our Garden Route roadtrip so far has been hiking in Robberg Nature Reserve. This spectacular peninsula jutting out from Plettenberg Bay truly offers some of the best coastal hikes in South Africa. ๐ŸŒŠโ›ฐ๏ธ

We were blown away by the views of the dramatic cliffs, seal colonies and panoramic ocean views that go on forever. The trail took us up craggy cliff faces, down giant sand dunes and on the rugged coastline. Plus itโ€™s family-friendly and doable with kids! ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿฆญโ€จ
๐Ÿ”– Bookmark this for your next trip to the Garden Route!

Trail options and estimated times

๐ŸฅพThe Gap Circuit:
A 2km to 2.1km easy loop that takes approximately 30-60 minutes to complete.ย Offers views of the coast and a historical cleft.โ€จ
๐ŸฅพThe Witsand / Island Circuit:
A 4.7km to 5.5km moderate loop that takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to hike.ย (We did this!) It adds a climb to a sand dune, views of a seal colony and an extra loop round a small island.โ€จ
๐ŸฅพThe Point Circuit:
The longest, a 9km to 11km round trip that takes 3 to 5 hours.ย This goes to the tip of the peninsula, requiring scrambling over rocks.โ€จ

  • Standing at the edge of a continent ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐ŸŒ

After driving approx 3 hours from Cape Town, weโ€™ve reached the southernmost point of Africa at Cape Agulhas โ€” where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans officially meet. ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠ

As a slight detour from the Garden Route, this stop was unforgettable as we:

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Climbed to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views

๐Ÿ“Walked down to the iconic Africa-shaped stone map at the tip

โ˜•๏ธ Had coffee at the southernmost cafe in Africa ๐Ÿ˜†

Thereโ€™s something humbling about standing right where a continent ends.

  • Weโ€™re currently on a road trip along the Garden Route, South Africa ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ and found an amazing spot to see wild African penguins - without the crowd or hefty entry fees!

Boulders Beach has sadly become a hugely popular spot and entry fees are now R215 ($11) for international visitors. There are fewer penguins than before that swim up to you on the beach and the unruly behavior of tourists are honestly scaring penguins off. ๐Ÿง

Stony Point, at Bettyโ€™s Bay, on the other hand is quiet, empty and there are penguins everywhere. Entry is R45 ($2.25) per person and that allows you to take the boardwalk thatโ€™s lined with penguins, dassies and Cape cormorants.

๐Ÿš— Itโ€™s also a 1-hour drive from Cape Town, along the scenic Clarence Drive.

  • One of the biggest reasons we chose this lifestyle was for our kid to learn outside the classroom. And Cape Town has been incredible for that. ๐Ÿงญ๐ŸŒ

Here are some of our favorite learning experiences:

๐Ÿ”น Marine biology at Mouille Pointโ€™s rock pools โ€“ our kid got hands-on with sea stars, anemones, and the hidden life of the tidal pools. A full-on science lesson with @aonyx_marine_experiences that felt more like play. ๐Ÿš

๐Ÿ”น History at Robben Island โ€“ visiting where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned sparked deep discussions about justice and freedom.

๐Ÿ”น Wildlife at Giraffe House โ€“ nothing compares to touching giraffes, snakes, frogs and hedgehogs up close. A wildlife lesson that no textbook can compete with.

๐Ÿ”น District Six Museum โ€“ a powerful, age-appropriate way to start South African history and learn about hardship and resilience.

This is what we love about worldschooling โ€” education doesnโ€™t stop at a desk.๐Ÿ“–

What do you think โ€” should kids learn more through experiences like this? Or do you prefer keeping travel and school separate? ๐Ÿ‘‡
