  • If youโ€™re thinking of digital nomading with your family, these are the absolute โ€œneversโ€ we live by to ensure smooth travels and productive workdays.

What are your non-negotiables for family travel?

โŒ Never overpack:

More stuff equals more hassle. Every extra item means more to lug, more to keep track of, and more potential for lost items. A few favorites, versatile items, and relying on local playgrounds and nature works wonders.

โŒ Never skip travel insurance:

This is non-negotiable. With kids, anything can happen โ€“ scraped knees, ear infections, or even more serious incidents. Travel insurance will cover medical emergencies, lost luggage, and trip delays. Weโ€™ve have the nomad annual insurance plan from @safetywings for years and theyโ€™ve been super reliable!

โŒ Never rely solely on restaurant meals:

Eating out for every meal is expensive, can be unhealthy, and frankly, gets tiring for kids. We always look for Airbnbs with kitchens and try to cook simple meals (especially dinner so we can enjoy downtime in the evenings). It saves money, offers healthier options, and provides a familiar routine.

โŒ Never underestimate the power of routines :

While digital nomad life is about flexibility, kids thrive on some predictability. We maintain a loose routine for sleep, meals, and reading time. We often spend the day exploring with spurts of reading time and downtime in the evenings.

โŒ Never forget to back up important documents:

Losing passports, visas, or all your precious travel photos would be devastating. We use icloud storage and keep physical/digital backups of all essential documents.

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป Hi! Iโ€™m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum. I share all Iโ€™ve learned about digital nomad family travel here. So glad youโ€™re here! ๐ŸŒ

  • Letโ€™s be honest โ€” going on safari with kids can get pricey fast ๐Ÿ˜… especially if you have a big family! Safari lodges can run from $250-1500/night; meals and game drives are often additional expenses. ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ’ก But did you know that some private reserves actually open their game drives to the public โ€” even if youโ€™re not staying at their lodge? ๐Ÿ™Œ

For instance, the award-winning Buffelsdrift Reserve offers a 3-hour guided safari for just R745 per adult (about $37.50 USD). Kids are cheaper!

Instead of staying in the private reserve (which cost $300++/night), we booked a charming farm cottage nearby in Oudtshoorn for just $75/night โ€” then booked our game drives separately at Buffelsdrift private reserve. ๐Ÿ™Œ

The game drive was one of the best weโ€™ve done! We saw buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, white rhinos, and even baby meerkats โ€” all from the back of an open 4x4. Their expert ranger truly made the difference: he was knowledgeable, fun and engaging, sharing so much info and fun facts while guiding us through the bush.

Plus, we spent the afternoon exploring the main lodge, enjoying a relaxing lunch by the lake, strolling around and watching birds weave their nests and nyala roaming around the restaurant.

โœ… Total cost: Less than $200 for our whole family โ€” to enjoy the safari and the luxury lodge

๐ŸŽฏ A safari with kids doesnโ€™t have to break the bank! Save this post for future planning!

  • Everyone comes to Africa for the Big Fiveโ€ฆ but we came for the meerkats. ๐Ÿพ

My daughter has always been a little obsessed with these curious, quirky creatures, so when we heard about the Five Shy Meerkats experience in Oudtshoorn, we knew it had to be on our list.

At sunrise, we huddled together in the bush veld of De Zeekoe reserve and waited patiently for the meerkats to rise from their slumber. With the sky painted in soft sunrise hues, we sat quietly as they began to emerge โ€” one by one โ€” from their burrows, blinking at the new day. They peeked curiously at us, one crouched into a ball, another stretching like a cat. Slowly, they began to stand on their hind legs, looking out into the distance for food.

As we watched in awe, our guide โ€” whoโ€™s been studying meerkats for 19 years โ€” shared the funniest stories and insights. ๐ŸŒ… He told stories of their quirks, their sentinels keeping watch, and their playful squabbles that had us smiling from ear to ear. ๐Ÿพ

It felt like we were guests in their home, watching life unfold at meerkat pace.โœจ

  • Hands down one of the most surreal moments โ€” walking on foot through Bellevue Forest Reserve with wild giraffes roaming freely around us. ๐Ÿฆ’

No fences, no vehicles... just a slow, quiet walk through the bush with a trained guide and no predators around us.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact: Giraffes only sleep about 30 minutes a day, and their tongues can be up to 45cm long to help them eat from thorny trees (without getting poked!).

If youโ€™re in the Eastern Cape, this is a must-do. Ethical, safe, and seriously unforgettable. Would you try this? ๐Ÿ‘‡
