Where to Stay in Cozumel, Mexico

Wondering where to stay in Cozumel? In this guide, I’ve put together an accommodation guide with my top picks for the best hotels in Cozumel.

Cozumel has become one of Mexico’s most popular destinations thanks to its rich marine life, host of first class resorts and its stunning landscape. You’ll find great snorkel and dive sites dotted all over the island’s shore, as well as empty beaches and scenic coastal drives.

I recently revisited Cozumel Island (my last visit was 10 years ago), and was blown away by how pristine it has remained. The place still holds its natural beauty despite development of infrastructure. Regardless, the island offers a Mexico-Caribbean themed cultural richness. The island has no shortage of restaurants serving traditional Mexican foods, plus endless miles of white-sand beaches and shallow spearmint waters.

To help plan your trip, I have compiled a guide on where to stay in Cozumel, including the best areas to stay and hotel recommendations for every kind of traveler. I haven’t stayed in them all but many of them have been recommended by my local friends.

Best Areas to Stay in Cozumel

In contrast to the neighboring mainland cities of Playa del Carmen and Cancun, the island remains relatively unspoiled. It hosts an abundance of wildlife and the majority of its rainforests remain intact. I loved the place, so I plan to visit as much as I can with my family, especially since I live so close.

Cozumel is the biggest island along the Caribbean coast of Mexico. On such a big island, how do we know where’s the best area to stay? My guide will break down each area you can stay in Cozumel, as well as hotel recommendations for each type of traveler: budget, mid-range, luxury, families, and couples.

  • Downtown/Central (Centro) – best area for first-time visitors
  • North Coast (Costa Norte) – best area for adults and couples
  • South Coast (Costa Sur) – best area for diving and snorkeling

Downtown Centro: Where to Stay in Cozumel for First-Time Visitors

This is the area to stay if you want to be within walking distance of the majority of the activities and excitement the island has to offer. Full of restaurants, bars, and shops, there’s plenty to keep you busy day and night.

One of the benefits of staying in Centro is that you don’t need to rent a car or scooter to get around. Everything is within walking distance, including the ferry terminal which has boats departing for Playa del Carmen every 30 minutes.

The center square is famous for its nightly concerts where you can find live music of all genres, from traditional mariachi bands to contemporary pop groups. The clock tower is an icon and makes for a great photo opportunity. For me, the musical fountains are a must-see.

Costa Norte: Where to Stay on the Beach

I see Costa Norte as the best area to stay in Cozumel for those who want to keep outside of the boisterous center. A great area for adults and couples looking to enjoy a quieter trip.

The northern coast of Cozumel is where you’ll find the Costa Norte beaches, an area perfect to unwind in a more intimate setting. The water is calmer here which makes for great swimming and snorkeling. There are some restaurants and bars to keep you busy but, if you’re looking for a change of pace, downtown is only a 15-20 minute drive away.

I would suggest steering clear of Costa Norte if you’re a scuba diver. The area is far away from the marine park and generally scuba companies will not pick you up in this region.

Costa Sur: Where to Stay in Cozumel for Diving & Snorkeling

For those looking for a more active vacation, Costa Sur is home to some of the best scuba diving in Cozumel. This is where to stay in Cozumel for snorkeling and diving. With the island being famous for scuba, you know it’ll be something special.

You can find Chankanaab Park here, located in Cozumel’s national reef marine park. Where you can go snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, and explore the on-site botanical gardens. The area around Costa Sur is pretty flat, making it perfect for biking or taking a walk along the beach. You’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars in the area as well.

Costa Sur is a great choice for those who want to be close to the diving spots. Most of the scuba diving companies have their offices in this area and will pick you up from your hotel for free. When I visited I went with Scuba Tony, their staff were excellent and really made me feel at ease with it being my first time.

Best All Inclusive Cozumel Resorts

Lots of vacationers like to go all-inclusive when they visit Cozumel. I did this myself when I went to Cozumel and we stayed at Allegro Cozumel on the all-inclusive package. On paper, it looked like a great place for the kids, but it turned out to have low food quality and overall left a dreadful impression on me.

The resorts with all-inclusive packages generally don’t come cheap. Overall however you do save a lot of money as food and drinks outside of the hotel takes up a hefty slice of your spending money. Plus the fact they offer lots of entertainment in the day and at night, so you don’t have to splurge on other activities as often.

When I decide to visit again I almost certainly will go with an all-inclusive package again, just not at the overpriced Allegro Cozumel. From speaking to a few of my friends they have suggested some other options for my next visit in which I have highlighted below.

Budget – Grand Park Royal Cozumel – All Inclusive

At Grand Park Royal Cozumel – All Inclusive, you’ll sleep in cozy beds and have easy access to nearby coral reefs and wildlife parks. After exploring, unwind on your private balcony with Caribbean views and take a refreshing dip in one of the resort’s four inviting swimming pools. Check rates.

Mid-range – Sunscape Sabor Cozumel

I think if I were to visit again this would be my choice. Sunscape Sabor Cozumel hotel is much more luxurious. According to a friend of mine, you can dive into adventure with activities like snorkeling, sailing, and scuba diving – you’re just a quick drive away from the island’s main coral reefs. Check rates.

Luxury – Dreams Cozumel Cape Resort & Spa

An incredible dining experience and unforgettable nighttime entertainment are what you expect from an all-inclusive package. This is what the Dreams Cozumel Cape Resort & Spa provides. Plus, you’ll find Costa del Sol Beach less than 1 km from Resort. Check rates.

Best All Inclusive Cozumel Resorts

Family – Iberostar Cozumel

Iberostar is great for families as they have family all-inclusive packages together with family rooms. A family of 4 whom I know personally stayed here. They said the billiards and table tennis kept their kids busy for hours while they relaxed poolside with a cocktail. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is just up the road for the children too. Check rates.

Couples (Adults only) – Secrets Aura Cozumel

In need of a child-free getaway? Secrets Aura is the only all-inclusive resort for adults only. The hotel has unique tequila tasting sessions for those who want to get a bit tipsy. There is Mexican-Caribbean influenced cuisine throughout plus a French restaurant to mix things up a little. This is one of the best places to stay in Cozumel for couples without a doubt. Check rates.

Cozumel Travel Guide

How to get to Cozumel

First things first, what are the options to get to Cozumel? If you’re staying in Cancun, the best way to get to Cozumel is by taking the 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. The cost of the ferry is around $250 MXN or $12.50 USD for a one-way adult ticket.

If you’re staying in Riviera Maya, there are a few options for getting to Cozumel. You can take the 45-minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, as mentioned above. Another option is to take a 90-minute ferry ride from Puerto Juarez. I recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance as they do sell out, especially during high season.

If you plan to arrive by plane then you will be flying into the Cozumel International Airport, which is located just south of downtown San Miguel de Cozumel. The only direct flight into Cozumel International is from Monterrey. Don’t worry though, there are many connecting flights to Monterrey from other places in Mexico. Search for Monterrey to Cozumel flights here.

How to get Around Cozumel

When you arrive there are a few options to get around the island. Cozumel is only about 48km (30 miles) around. You can easily get from one side of the island to the other in less than an hour. The best way to get around is by walking, car, scooter, or bicycle.

There are plenty of rental places where you can find a bicycle or scooter for the day. I recommend renting a bicycle if you’re planning to stay in one area, such as downtown. If you’re planning to explore the entire island, then I recommend renting a scooter or car.

Cars can be a little more expensive starting at around $310 MXN or $15 USD per day. Scooters are a little cheaper at $200 MXN or $10 USD per day. With us being a family, the car for us was the better option. If you’re looking to burn some calories and would prefer to go by bicycle, prices start at roughly $310 MXN or $15 USD per day. Have You Decided Where to Stay in Cozumel?

In my opinion, it really depends on what you want to get out of your visit regarding where you stay. For first-timers, I would stay in the Centro area so you’re close to all the activities. You’ll have easy access to anywhere on the island, north or south this way.

If you’re an avid scuba diver then the south of the island would be best. Here is where you’ll find the marine park, where most of the dive companies visit. Plus there are lots of beachfront hotels to choose from.

The north is the lesser populated portion of the island. There aren’t as many hotels but this comes with its benefits. Beaches are almost completely uninhibited so you’ll feel like you have your own private beach a lot of the time.

Hopefully this guide has helped you decide where to stay in Cozumel Mexico. For more info on Cozumel, check out this comprehensive list of things to do in Cozumel. Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions about accommodation in Cozumel.
