Where to Stay in Holbox: Best Hotels in Holbox 2025

May 31, 2022

Where to stay in Holbox for a taste of island life? Here are my recommendations on the best hotels in Holbox for different types of travelers.

Pronounced “hol-bosh”, Isla Holbox is a small island located north of Mexico’s Yucatan
peninsula
. Standing at the point where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean Sea, this tropical island boasts pristine waters teeming with wildlife, including whale sharks, flamingoes, and manta rays.

Unlike nearby tourist towns like Cancun and Tulum, the dreamy island is gloriously car-free and largely undeveloped. Only a small part of the island is inhabited, and even then, it never feels overrun with visitors. No paved roads, no cars, no hassling. Just miles and miles of spearmint water and powder-puff white sand beach.

For those planning a trip to Isla Holbox, I’ve compiled a detailed guide on where to stay in Holbox: from the best areas to the best family-friendly hotels and adults-only Holbox boutique hotels.

Where To Stay In Holbox

Isla Holbox may be a small island, but there are different areas to stay in Holbox that cater to various kinds of travelers. Young backpackers will prefer to stay in downtown Holbox, where the restaurants and bars are concentrated. Couples and families will love the tranquility and pristine water on the western end. I personally think the best area to stay in Holbox is the eastern end where the sand bar and the best beach lie.

We’ve divided the best hotels to stay in Holbox according to these areas:
● Downtown – best area for backpackers and budget travelers
● Eastern End – best area for couples and families
● Western End – best area for honeymooners

Dia de los Muertos Mexico City

Hi, I’m Nellie — a lifelong traveler, book author, and adventurous mum. In 2021, we moved our home base to San Miguel de Allende, and absolutely fell in love with Mexico. I created this blog to share my love for Mexico; read more here.

Prices of Holbox Hotels

We found prices on Isla Holbox to be the same as Cancun and Playa del Carmen, which are some of the highest in Mexico. But there is a good selection of budget hostels as well as mid-range boutique hotels in Holbox.

In general, hotels on the beachfront are much more expensive than hotels further inland. You can usually save quite a bit by staying a few blocks away from the beach. Most budget hotels are located in Centro Holbox; the eastern and western ends of the island have more exclusive luxury resorts.

Most Holbox hotels will take credit cards. But you should still take cash as most other establishments only accept cash. There are only two ATMs on Holbox, but they’re not reliable as they might run out of cash or not accept your card! The closest ATM to the Holbox pier is at CIBanco, just a 3-minute walk down the main road.

Best Hotels in Holbox Centro

Downtown (Centro) Holbox is essentially the liveliest part of the island which runs alongside Playa Holbox. The heart of downtown is the main square where the basketball court is, flanked by the main drag Calle Tiburon Ballena and Calle Palomino. This is where all the island’s restaurants and bars are concentrated. If you like to be in the heart of the action, downtown is where you’d want to stay.

Best Mid Range Hotel in Holbox Centro: Tropical Suites by MIJ

We stayed at this mid range, small-scale boutique hotel in the quiet end of town, about 4 blocks from the beach. The suites here are massive, with a separate living/working space and bedroom. It’s a great option for families and digital nomads, and the WiFi is pretty fast and reliable. We could work remotely from here and my husband even did Zoom calls here The pool is excellent and breakfast on the rooftop is affordable too. Book your stay here!

Travel Insurance for Frequent Travelers

We’ve been using Safety Wing for years now, and it’s one of the best decisions we’ve made as digital nomads. Their Nomad Insurance plan is affordable and provides solid coverage for medical emergencies regardless of where we’re traveling.

Best Luxury Hotel in Holbox Centro: Casa Las Tortugas Petit Beach Hotel

Best Family Hotel in Holbox Centro: Holbox Dream Beachfront Hotel

With its desirable beachfront location, Holbox Dream Beachfront Hotel is in the heart of Centro Holbox, steps from restaurants and shops. It features tropical gardens and thatched-roof gazebos as well as a small pool right on the beach.

Best Hotels in Holbox East

Personally, I think Isla Holbox’s eastern end is the best area to stay. This is where you’ll find the gorgeous sand bank and the best beach on the island. The beach here is much wider and the water is a glorious shade of spearmint blue. It’s never crowded and staying here definitely feels like you’re away from it all. That said, you’ll need to walk about 10-15 minutes to get to town for lunch/dinner. I find it a good trade-off though!

Best Budget Hotel in Holbox East: Villas Palmar Holbox

Villas Palmar Holbox is a laid-back hotel less than two blocks from the beach. We met a couple who stayed here and were pretty happy with this place. This humble hotel boasts affordable rates and comfortable rooms. There’s also a shaded terrace with hammocks, an outdoor swimming pool, bikes for rent, and a table tennis set. Check rates here.

The hotel is located right on the beach, with an outdoor pool surrounded by palm trees, greenery, and a relaxing atmosphere. Book your stay here!

Best Mid Range Hotel in Holbox East: Villas HM Paraiso Del Mar

Best Luxury Hotel in Holbox East: Hotel Villas Flamingos

In my opinion, this is the hotel with the best location in Holbox!
Located right in front of the sand bank (where you can walk for miles and miles at low tide), Villas Flamingo has rustic yet elegant bungalows overlooking the ocean. Every room has a balcony with hammock; the Bungalow Mangle has a hot tub and netted hammock with a seaview inside the room. Check rates.

Another Holbox boutique hotel with an excellent location in front of the sand bars is Las Nubes de Holbox. This laid-back hotel has a picture-perfect waterfront pool and very romantic vibes. The design of casual bungalows with hammocks, terraces, and balconies, makes for a perfect honeymoon destination.

Best Family Hotel in Holbox East: Casa Pirata

Best Hotels in Holbox West

The beaches on the western end of the island aren’t quite as pristine as the ones of the eastern end, but they are much quieter and more remote. Here is also where you’ll find the most exclusive luxurious resorts. If you’re looking for privacy and tranquility, then this is the area for you. You will need to hire a bike/golf cart for your stay here though, as it is a distance from downtown Holbox.

Did You Decide Where to Stay in Holbox?

In a part of Mexico that has been developed extensively for tourism, places like Isla Holbox are few and far between. It’s one of the few places in Mexico that have escaped the clutches of mass tourism and I truly hope it stays this way.

From the call to prayer echoing over the Bosphorus to the aroma of çay and spices in the bazaars, Istanbul is a crossroads of history and cultures — and a fantastic playground for kids with lots of learning opportunities!

  • We’ve traveled South Africa several times but visiting a place is different from actually living in it. It’s been 2 months since we came to Cape Town 🇿🇦 and here are some things we’ve learned:

1️⃣ Power cuts can happen from time to time — they last hours and you need backup plans 🔦

2️⃣ Security is everywhere — electric fences, guards, alarms, even in nice areas 🚨

3️⃣ The diversity is mind-blowing — 11 official languages, so many cultures in one place 🌍

4️⃣ Public transport is sadly non-existent — most people rely 100% on their car 🚘

5️⃣ Service can feel slow — “African time” is a thing ⏳

6️⃣ Safety is an issue — you need to be careful of where you go, some areas like Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain are best avoided ⛔️

7️⃣ Tap water is drinkable in Cape Town — we really appreciate that coming from Mexico 💧

8️⃣ Wildlife is everywhere — baboons on the roadside, eagles in our backyard, penguins on the beach, and game reserves just an hour away 🐧🦁🐒

9️⃣ People are warm and often greet you with a smile, even strangers 🌞

🔟 Groceries are fresh and high quality, and you get SO many options 🛒

  • ⚡️Controversial: As digital nomads, we are living our dream life… but are we also part of a bigger problem?

A few weeks ago, I shared a post about our cost of living in Cape Town 🇿🇦, where we’re currently based. I just wanted to share them for fellow digital nomads and had no intention of upsetting anyone.

It went viral — and with it came a flood of angry comments from Capetonians. Many said digital nomads are pricing out locals and forcing them out of their homes. And they’re not wrong. 💸🏠🛫

The truth is, the digital nomad movement is changing cities. Not just Cape Town. We’ve seen it in Mexico City, Lisbon, Bali, and so many others. Rents go up. Locals leave. The balance shifts.

And here’s the hard part: we love this life. The freedom, the experiences with our kid and the chance to show her the world. But at the same time, we don’t want to ignore the impact we (and thousands like us) are having.

So what’s the answer? We don’t have a simple one, and we can’t solve the whole problem on our own, but we can be more mindful travelers. Here’s how we try to do better as a digital nomad family…

🏡 Choose locally-owned housing

☕️ Support local businesses daily
🐌 Stay longer, move slower

🏘️ Be mindful about neighborhood choice

🫡Respect local culture & pace

This lifestyle is a privilege. And with it comes responsibility.

Curious — do you think digital nomads are part of the problem, or can we be part of the solution too? 👇

🏡 Choose Locally-Owned Housing
→ We try to seek long-term rentals found off-Airbnb, or hosted accommodation in local homes.

☕️ Support Local Businesses Daily
→ We prioritize cafés, restaurants, and shops run by locals instead of international chains.

🐌 Stay Longer, Move Slower
→ Fast travel puts pressure on neighborhoods. Long stays mean we integrate more and create steadier income for locals.

🏘️ Be Mindful About Neighborhood Choice
→ We avoid gentrification hotspots where locals are being displaced.

🫡Respect Local Culture & Pace
→ We’re learning local phrases, hoping to understand customs, and integrate respectfully — so it feels like cultural exchange, not takeover.

This lifestyle is a privilege. And with it comes responsibility.

Curious — do you think digital nomads are part of the problem, or can we be part of the solution too? 👇

  • My daughter is only 10 and she’s already braver than me! 🥹🙌🏽

Over the weekend, we headed up to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, where we’re currently spending 6 months. The iconic flat-topped mountain towers over the city, and its top covers an area of 57 sq km, and rimmed with viewpoints.

When we learned that you can actually abseil down the mountain, Alberto couldn’t be more excited, and so was Kaleya! 🏔️

I, on the other hand, having done abseiling before, wasn’t all too keen. Honestly, since reaching my 40s, I’ve lost interest in seeking thrills this way. 😬

It was pretty nerve-wrecking to watch Kaleya dangle off the edge with nothing but a rope attached. I was amazed by how calm and collected Kaleya was the entire time! She wasn’t nervous or scared at all. In fact she enjoyed the whole experience so much she said she wants to do it again!

Essential Info:

🪂 How: We went with Cape Extreme Adventure Tours (www.capextreme.com)

💰Cost: R1050 (US$60) per person

👧🏻 Min age: 10 years old

📆 Times: Several departures everyday

⏰ Duration: 1 hour+ for entire experience

Would you go abseiling down Table Mountain? Better yet, would you bring your kids???

We’ve traveled South Africa several times but visiting a place is different from actually living in it. It’s been 2 months since we came to Cape Town 🇿🇦 and here are some things we’ve learned: 1️⃣ Power cuts can happen from time to time — they last hours and you need backup plans 🔦
🔟 Groceries are fresh and high quality, and you get SO many options 🛒 Hi! I’m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum. I share all I’ve learned about digital nomad family travel here. ⚡️Controversial: As digital nomads, we are living our dream life… but are we also part of a bigger problem? A few weeks ago, I shared a post about our cost of living in Cape Town 🇿🇦, where we’re currently based. I just wanted to share them for fellow digital nomads and had no intention of upsetting anyone. It went viral — and with it came a flood of angry comments from Capetonians. Many said digital nomads are pricing out locals and forcing them out of their homes. And they’re not wrong. 💸🏠🛫 The truth is, the digital nomad movement is changing cities.
☕️ Support local businesses daily 🐌 Stay longer, move slower
🏘️ Be mindful about neighborhood choice
 🫡Respect local culture & pace
This lifestyle is a privilege. And with it comes responsibility. Curious — do you think digital nomads are part of the problem, or can we be part of the solution too? 👇 👋🏻 Hi!
👇 👋🏻 Hi! I’m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum. You need to add this to your bucket list! 🚠 Taking a ride on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is a must if you’re visiting Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦 The rotating cable cars take you up 1,067 meters above sea level to the summit of one of the New7Wonders of Nature. What’s cool is that the base rotates 360° and you get views of the city, ocean, and the iconic Lion’s Head as you ascend 😍 🎟️ Roundtrip ticket: ~R450 ($25 USD) for adults
🕒 Ride duration: 5 minutes
📍 Departs from Tafelberg Road
🗓️ Best time to go: Early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds + epic golden light

My daughter is only 10 and she’s already braver than me! 🥹🙌🏽 Over the weekend, we headed up to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, where we’re currently spending 6 months. The iconic flat-topped mountain towers over the city, and its top covers an area of 57 sq km, and rimmed with viewpoints. When we learned that you can actually abseil down the mountain, Alberto couldn’t be more excited, and so was Kaleya! 🏔️ I, on the other hand, having done abseiling before, wasn’t all too keen. Honestly, since reaching my 40s, I’ve lost interest in seeking thrills this way. 😬 It was pretty nerve-wrecking to watch Kaleya dangle off the edge with nothing but a rope attached. I was amazed by how calm and collected Kaleya was the entire time! She wasn’t nervous or scared at all. In fact she enjoyed the whole experience so much she said she wants to do it again! Essential Info: 🪂 How: We went with Cape Extreme Adventure Tours (www.capextreme.com) 💰Cost: R1050 (US$60) per person 👧🏻 Min age: 10 years old 📆 Times: Several departures everyday ⏰ Duration: 1 hour+ for entire experience Would you go abseiling down Table Mountain? Better yet, would you bring your kids??? 👋🏻 Hi! I’m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum. I share all I’ve learned about digital nomad family travel here.
