  • We’re finally back in Madagascar 🇲🇬 , 15 years after we honeymooned here! It feels so special showing Kaleya one of our favorite countries in the world. 🌎

Any trip to Madagascar is an adventure. It’s not an easy place to travel — only a small % of the country has paved roads, tourism infrastructure almost doesn’t exist, and the current unrest is keeping travelers away. (We’re safe here by the way!)

But it’s a truly unique country, unlike anywhere else we’ve been. Madagascar is the only place where you can find wild lemurs and fossas, the world’s smallest and largest chameleons, and enormous centuries-old baobab trees. 🪾

Our kid is embracing this adventure in Madagascar! I’m amazed by how resilient she is — even the brutal heat, bumpy rides and lack of electricity are not bothering her. It’s a deeply rewarding place for people who like traveling off the beaten path!

  • 14 years ago, Alberto and I came to Madagascar on our honeymoon and it became our favorite country in the world! We’re SO excited to be back, now with our 10-year-old daughter in tow. 😊

On our first day in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, we were already blown away by what we saw at the Lemur Park.

Just outside of the city, this 5-hectare park is home to 49 rescued lemurs from all over the country. It has 7 different species of lemurs and we spotted 6! The highlight was seeing this family of Coquerel’s Sifaka cuddled together on a tree!

Fun facts about lemurs:

🐾 Madagascar is the only place in the world where wild lemurs are found.

🐾 There are 117 species of lemurs in Madagascar! 17 have gone extinct due to hunting (yes some people eat them 😔) and loss of habitat.

🐾 They are the world’s oldest primates- they existed before apes!

🐾 Most lemurs are herbivorous but certain species (like the ring-tailed lemur) eat little chameleons.

  • If you’re thinking of digital nomading with your family, these are the absolute “nevers” we live by to ensure smooth travels and productive workdays.

What are your non-negotiables for family travel?

❌ Never overpack:

More stuff equals more hassle. Every extra item means more to lug, more to keep track of, and more potential for lost items. A few favorites, versatile items, and relying on local playgrounds and nature works wonders.

❌ Never skip travel insurance:

This is non-negotiable. With kids, anything can happen – scraped knees, ear infections, or even more serious incidents. Travel insurance will cover medical emergencies, lost luggage, and trip delays. We’ve have the nomad annual insurance plan from @safetywings for years and they’ve been super reliable!

❌ Never rely solely on restaurant meals:

Eating out for every meal is expensive, can be unhealthy, and frankly, gets tiring for kids. We always look for Airbnbs with kitchens and try to cook simple meals (especially dinner so we can enjoy downtime in the evenings). It saves money, offers healthier options, and provides a familiar routine.

❌ Never underestimate the power of routines :

While digital nomad life is about flexibility, kids thrive on some predictability. We maintain a loose routine for sleep, meals, and reading time. We often spend the day exploring with spurts of reading time and downtime in the evenings.

❌ Never forget to back up important documents:

Losing passports, visas, or all your precious travel photos would be devastating. We use icloud storage and keep physical/digital backups of all essential documents.

  • Let’s be honest — going on safari with kids can get pricey fast 😅 especially if you have a big family! Safari lodges can run from $250-1500/night; meals and game drives are often additional expenses. 🐘🌿

💡 But did you know that some private reserves actually open their game drives to the public — even if you’re not staying at their lodge? 🙌

For instance, the award-winning Buffelsdrift Reserve offers a 3-hour guided safari for just R745 per adult (about $37.50 USD). Kids are cheaper!

Instead of staying in the private reserve (which cost $300++/night), we booked a charming farm cottage nearby in Oudtshoorn for just $75/night — then booked our game drives separately at Buffelsdrift private reserve. 🙌

The game drive was one of the best we’ve done! We saw buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, white rhinos, and even baby meerkats — all from the back of an open 4x4. Their expert ranger truly made the difference: he was knowledgeable, fun and engaging, sharing so much info and fun facts while guiding us through the bush.

Plus, we spent the afternoon exploring the main lodge, enjoying a relaxing lunch by the lake, strolling around and watching birds weave their nests and nyala roaming around the restaurant.

✅ Total cost: Less than $200 for our whole family — to enjoy the safari and the luxury lodge

🎯 A safari with kids doesn’t have to break the bank! Save this post for future planning!

  • Still can’t believe we watched whales breaching right from our suite at @MorukuruFamilyDeHoop 🐋💙

De Hoop Nature Reserve sits along South Africa’s famous Whale Coast, one of the best places in the world to see southern right whales. Each year, these gentle giants migrate here to the warm and shallow waters and nurse their young — often coming incredibly close to shore.

From the comfort of our family suite, coffee in hand, we watched them breach, tail-slap, and glide through the waves all day — a front-row seat to one of nature’s most awe-inspiring shows.

Let’s be honest — going on safari with kids can get pricey fast 😅 especially if you have a big family! Safari lodges can run from $250-1500/night; meals and game drives are often additional expenses. 🐘🌿 💡 But did you know that some private reserves actually open their game drives to the public — even if you’re not staying at their lodge? 🙌 For instance, the award-winning Buffelsdrift Reserve offers a 3-hour guided safari for just R745 per adult (about $37.50 USD). Kids are cheaper! Instead of staying in the private reserve (which cost $300++/night), we booked a charming farm cottage nearby in Oudtshoorn for just $75/night — then booked our game drives separately at Buffelsdrift private reserve. 🙌 The game drive was one of the best we’ve done! ✅ Total cost: Less than $200 for our whole family — to enjoy the safari and the luxury lodge 🎯 A safari with kids doesn’t have to break the bank! Save this post for future planning! 👋🏻 Hi! I’m Nellie, a travel writer and adventurous mum. I share all I’ve learned about digital nomad family travel here. Still can’t believe we watched whales breaching right from our suite at @MorukuruFamilyDeHoop 🐋💙
